August 2017 Washington, DC

Here’s an updated and expanded version reflecting your Arlington experience:

While my trip to the Washington, DC area was business-focused, I spent the week in Arlington, just across the river from the nation’s capital. Unfortunately, my schedule didn’t allow for any sightseeing this time around, but the far-away views from my hotel offered a captivating glimpse of what the area has to offer. There’s so much to see and do in DC, and I’m already looking forward to planning some personal time on my next business trip in a few months to explore it all.

During this visit, I stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn in Pentagon City, which offered an excellent base of operations. My room featured stunning views of the Pentagon and iconic DC landmarks and memorials across the river, providing a sense of connection to the history and significance of the area even while I was focused on work.

The location of the hotel was also incredibly convenient. Just a short walk away was The Fashion Centre Mall, a hub for shopping and dining, including one of my all-time favorite fast-casual spots, The Shake Shack. While the area boasts an impressive selection of high-end restaurants, sometimes you just crave a perfectly cooked burger and Shake Shack hit the spot.

Overall, the Marriott Residence Inn in Pentagon City was a great choice for my week-long stay, blending comfort, convenience, and a touch of luxury. Next time, I’ll make sure to carve out time for exploring the historic landmarks and cultural highlights that make this region so special.

July 2017 Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Here’s an expanded version of your reflection:

This is the stunning view from my room on the 60th floor of the JW Marriott Marquis in Dubai, a sight that was simply breathtaking to wake up to each morning and equally magical to fall asleep to each night. Words can’t fully capture how impressed I was with every aspect of this hotel.

The room was exceptionally spacious and thoughtfully designed, with every detail reflecting luxury and comfort. The amenities were beyond impeccable, from the plush bedding to the beautifully appointed bathroom and advanced in-room technology. Each morning, I looked forward to the delightful breakfast in the Executive Lounge, where an impressive array of fresh and flavorful options set the perfect tone for the day. The happy hour each evening was equally noteworthy, offering a relaxing way to unwind and enjoy a variety of delicious snacks and beverages—all of which made dining in Dubai surprisingly affordable.

One of the highlights of my stay was the state-of-the-art fitness facilities, which rivaled the best upscale gym memberships. The equipment was modern and diverse, catering to every kind of workout, while the panoramic views from the gym added extra motivation to each session.

The only regret I have about my stay is that it lasted only three nights. With so much to see and experience both within the hotel and across Dubai, I wished for more time to fully immerse myself. The JW Marriott Marquis served as the perfect base from which to explore the region, offering unmatched comfort and convenience after long days of adventure.

Whether for leisure or business, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Dubai. It truly elevates the experience of staying in such a vibrant, cosmopolitan city.

June 2017 Granada, Nicaragua

Granada, Nicaragua, the oldest colonial city in the country, is a captivating destination that effortlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. Although we were there for just half a day, we embraced the opportunity to experience as much of this charming city as possible.

Our day began with a picturesque morning drive from Costa Rica to Granada, setting the stage for an unforgettable visit. Upon arriving, we made our way to The Garden Café, a delightful spot for lunch. Nestled in a beautifully restored colonial courtyard, the café offered a tranquil ambiance that perfectly captured the essence of Central America. The food was exceptional—fresh, flavorful, and a true reflection of the region’s culinary heritage.

After lunch, we embarked on a quintessential Granada experience: a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city’s vibrant streets. This leisurely journey allowed us to soak in the charm of Granada’s colorful colonial architecture, bustling markets, and lively atmosphere. The ride also brought us to the historic San Francisco Convent and Museum, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built in 1525, this remarkable site has withstood nearly 500 years of turbulent history, including pirate attacks and political upheavals. The museum housed fascinating exhibits, including pre-Columbian statues and artifacts, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of Nicaragua.

As the afternoon unfolded, we took a leisurely stroll around the central park square, a vibrant hub of activity and a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The square is framed by two stunning landmarks: the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, with its striking yellow façade and grand interiors, and the elegant Hotel Plaza Colón, a beautifully restored colonial building. The lively energy of the square, combined with the breathtaking views of these historic structures, created a perfect ending to our brief yet enriching visit.

Though our time in Granada was limited, the city left an indelible impression. Its blend of history, culture, and warm hospitality makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Central America.

May 2017 Papagayo Bay, Costa Rica

For our 2017 anniversary, my wife and I decided to return to Costa Rica, a country that had captured our hearts during our first visit. This time, we opted for the northern tour to experience a different side of this vibrant and diverse destination. We flew into Liberia, a gateway to the stunning Guanacaste region, and chose the El Mangroove Hotel as our home base—a boutique luxury retreat nestled in Papagayo Bay. The hotel’s name, spelled with two o’s, became an inside joke as my wife frequently reminded me with a playful grin.

El Mangroove provided the perfect blend of authenticity and luxury, offering modern amenities while immersing us in the natural beauty and tranquility of Costa Rica. The property was set along a secluded beach, bordered by lush forests and the pristine waters of the bay. The highlight of our stay was waking up each morning to the calls of howler monkeys lounging in the trees right outside our room, a constant reminder of the country’s incredible biodiversity.

The hotel’s thoughtful design was evident everywhere, from the serene walking paths to the open-air dining spaces. Each evening, we strolled to the glass-walled dining room, where we indulged in a magnificent four-course meal. The cuisine was a celebration of local flavors, prepared with fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients and paired with impeccable service. The ambiance was magical, with candlelit tables, soft music, and the faint sound of waves lapping against the shore in the distance.

Our days were filled with adventure and relaxation. We explored nearby national parks, where we hiked trails through dense forests, encountered exotic wildlife, and marveled at waterfalls cascading into turquoise pools. When we weren’t out exploring, we lounged by the infinity pool, sipping cocktails and watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink.

This second trip to Costa Rica deepened our appreciation for the country’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and commitment to sustainability. The experience at El Mangroove wasn’t just a vacation; it was a celebration of our journey together as a couple, creating memories that we would treasure forever.
